Department of Economics

Established in 2001, the Department of Economics, Kannur University, began its academic journey at the Dr. Janaki Ammal Campus, Palayad, under the School of Development Studies. Originally known as the Department of Applied Economics, it has grown into a distinguished centre for postgraduate education and research in Economics. The department has consistently contributed to the development of competent economists, researchers, and policy analysts. In 2026, the department was shifted to the Mangattuparamba Campus, where it presently functions, continuing its commitment to academic excellence, research, and community-oriented development studies.

Economics has become increasingly important in understanding and addressing the complex social, developmental, and economic challenges faced by nations and communities. Recognizing this importance, the Department of Economics is committed to providing quality education, research opportunities, and academic excellence. The department is equipped with the necessary infrastructure and academic resources to train competent postgraduate students and young researchers in various branches of Economics.

Since its establishment, the department has successfully produced several batches of postgraduate students and doctoral scholars, many of whom have secured positions in higher education institutions, research organizations, government services, and various professional sectors.
