Kannur University has instituted a Chair in memory of the renowned anthropologist Prof. (Dr.) A. Aiyappan. A pioneer in the field of anthropology, Prof. Aiyappan is globally recognized for his significant contributions to the discipline. Through this initiative, the University aims to honour and recognize his valuable contributions to anthropology.

Prof. A. Aiyappan was born on 5 February 1905 at Maruthayur near Guruvayur. He was the first trained anthropologist from Kerala. He obtained his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the London School of Economics in 1937 under the guidance of Prof. Raymond Firth. During his academic career, Aiyappan also had close association with the renowned anthropologist Prof. Bronislaw Malinowski, whose influence inspired him to pursue advanced studies in anthropology.

Dr. Aiyappan served as the Director of the Madras Government Museum for a long period. Later, he was invited to Utkal University to establish the Department of Anthropology, where he served as Professor and Head of the Department. He was also the Founder Chairman of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, and served as the Rural Development Director of the Odisha Tribal Welfare Bureau. Furthermore, he served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala during 1969–1971.

The Tribal Research Centre, now known as KIRTADS (Kerala Institute for Research, Training and Development Studies of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes), was established under Prof. Aiyappan’s leadership, and he was later appointed as its Special Officer.

The Prof. (Dr.) A. Aiyappan Chair has been established with financial assistance from Dr. Sujatha Vidyasagar, daughter of Prof. Aiyappan. Dr. Sujatha expressed interest in supporting this initiative after watching a documentary on Prof. Aiyappan produced by Dr. M. S. Mahendra Kumar, Head of the Department of Anthropology, Kannur University.

Under this Chair, lectures, seminars, endowments, and awards will be organized every year in honour of Prof. (Dr.) A. Aiyappan.
