Workshop on Applications of Literary Theory in Research

The Department of Studies in English, Kannur University has organised a One Day Workshop on Applications of Literary Theory in Research. Dr. Priya K. Nair, Research Officer, Higher Eduction Council, Govt. of Kerala was the resource person. Dr. K. K. Kunhammad, Head of the Dept. of Studies in English welcomed the gathering and formally introduced the speaker. Though the workshop was designed for those who were new to the filed of literary research, Dr. Priya ensured that even senior researchers benefitted from it. The Workshop consisted of two parts with a lunch break in-between. In the morning session Dr. Priya, with the help of audio-visual tools, spoke about various methods of conducting research in the field of literature with specific reference to twenty-first century Indian English Fiction. Using Shodganga and the repertoire of PhD theses available on it, she tried to contextualise various approaches in academic research which were being used by scholars all over India. In the afternoon session she divided the participants into three groups and gave each a literary text to read and critically examine. She asked each group to come up with at least five viable research topics from those texts. Dr. Priya through this exercise explained to the participants the process of formulating a research topic. The Workshop concluded with a vibrant question and answer session. Ms. Rafseena. M, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Studies in English, delivered the vote of thanks. The workshop was felt very useful and relevant as it addressed the serious and complex problems related to the applications of literary theory in research . A total of forty-two participants were present at the Workshop.
