SHAKESPEARISING INDIAN THEATRE OR INDIANISING SHAKESPEARIAN THEATRE

Ludere Theatre Club, Department of Studies in English (DSE), Kannur University organized a webinar on William Shakespeare on the 8 th of December 2021 at 11 a.m. via Google Meet, online video conferencing platform. The talk by Dr Vikram Singh Thakur, Assistant Professor, School of Letters, Ambedkar University, Delhi A passionate YouTuber and podcaster, focused on how Shakespearean plays find entry into Indian subcontinent and its conspicuous appropriation into the grandeur of Parsi theatre

Dr Thakur explicated on the beauty of the adaptations seen across Parsi Theatres in Northern India in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century while staging Shakespearean plays in different languages with a fusion of Spanish costumes and more, highlighting on richness in diversity the Parsi theatres brought in along with the extravaganza of dance and music, and heightened sense of melodrama. In short, Shakespearian plays were tailored according to the needs of the culture and society they were staged for.

Overall, the session was a live and a fascinating one, enlightening the listeners on a subject that has been hidden and obscure so far. Dr Thakur’s interest and enthusiasm managed to kindle a sort of inspiration to search for such hidden gems.
