Three Day International Colloquium on Theory and the Transformative Humanities

Date: 2019 January 31, February 1 & 2

The three day colloquium was co-hosted by Kannur University with sponsorship from The Kerala State Higher Education Council for the benefit of the postgraduate students , research scholars and faculty members under the scheme of Erudite Lectures . The keynote speaker was Prof. Jonathan Culler from the Department of English, Cornell University , USA. There were eight major resource persons from various parts of South India to deliver talks in seven academic sessions. Young scholars presented their papers and there were lively interfaces in all the seven sessions. The students and scholars who participated were from different parts of Kerala. Total number of participants : 103.

Day 1. January 31st 2019. Session I - Inaugural : The Colloquium was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Dr. Gopinath Ravindran and the keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Jonathan Culler on the topic : The Interdisciplinary Humanities and the Future of Theory. Dr. K.K. Kunhammad , the HoD, welcomed the gathering and Ms. Rafseena , Assistant Professor , proposed the vote of thanks.

After the inaugural session, in Session II, Prof. Jonathan Culler delivered a lecture on Narrators of Novels and Speakers of Poems : Some Problems and this was followed by a thirty minute discussion where participants raised their queries to the speaker . The speaker answered all their questions and brought out his perceptions about the matters. In the next session there were paper presentations followed by discussions. Dr. N. Natarajan and Dr. Jeevan Kumar chaired the sessions of the day.

Day II - February 1, 2019 : Session III : The day began with a plenary talk by Dr. D. Natarajan , Retired Professor of English, Pondicherry University on the topic , Self Reflexivity in the Humanities and the Sciences and a discussion was there . The session was chaired by Dr. E.V. Fathima. The plenary was followed by paper presentation sessions in two halls for young research scholars with Dr. Zahira M and Ms. Bindu Amat chairing the respective sessions. In Session IV, Dr. Jeevan Kumar , Associate Prof. of English, Henry Baker College , Kottayam , presented his paper on Post Humanism, Post Truth, and the Negation of Perspectives, and there was a lively interaction after the presentation. After this there were parallel sessions for paper presentations and Dr. K.K. Kunhammad and Thulasi Das B. were in the chair .

Day III - February 2, 2019. Session V : Dr. Arunlal K, Asst. Prof. of English , Govt. College , Mokeri, delivered the talk on the area , Towards a New Theory of the Everyday : Perception and Response in the Digital Age . The talk aroused a lively discussion and the session was chaired by Mr. Sony Augustine. In Session VI, Dr. Haris K. made a plenary presentation on Readers as Mystics : The Experience of Literature , and there was an engaging interactive session with many questions and responses. The parallel paper presentation sessions were chaired by Dr. Harris K. and Nasrullah Mambrol, Founder of www.literariness.org . In Session VII, Dr. Priya K. Nair, Asst. Prof., St Theresa’s College , Ernakilam, delivered her plenary talk on Translanguaging : Humanities in the Era of Posthumanism and this was followed by a question- answer session. The session was chaired by Ms. Rafseena M. This was the last academic session and it was followed by the valedictory session in which the participants gave their oral feedback.

Every day the sessions began at 9.30 am and concluded by 5 pm. A total of 103 participants were there.
