NATIONAL SEMINAR ON DIMINISHING FARM RETURNS AND ISSUES OF WAYANAD TRIBES- 2016

The Department has organised a National Seminar on Diminishing Farm Returns and Issues of Wayanad Tribes on 11 March 2016. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. M.K. Abdul Khader, Hon’ble Vice-chancellor, Kannur University.

Dr. C. R. Sathyanarayanan, Deputy Director, Anthropological Survey of India, Southern Regional Office, Mysore delivered the key note address on the occasion. Dr. B Francis Kulirani, Course Director, introduced the Seminar and welcomed the gathering. Sri. V. K. Mohan Kumar, Former Director, KIRTADS presided over the inaugural session.

The seminar focussed on three sub-themes, 1) Diminishing farm returns and issues of tribal agriculturists, 2) Diminishing farm returns and issues of tribal agrarian labourers and 3) Diminishing farm returns and issues of tribal non-farm labourers. Presentations on all sub-themes were made by reputed tribal leaders viz., Palliyara Raman, Cheruvayal Raman, Kariyan Moopan, Kariyan Pilakandy, Raveendran Muyalkuni, Balan Vazhakkandy, Chandran Pilakandy, Mani Vemom, Balan Kongiyambam, Rajan Vengapalli, Pavithran Koonarvayal, Sukumaran Chalagadha, Kannan Chembilode, Vellan P representing tribal communities of Wayanad.

The concluding panel discussion resolved that the DRTS should continue to organize community-wise consultations to identify the developmental issues faced by each tribal community and take up the same with the development administrators for consideration. The seminar had more than seventy participants from tribal representatives, researchers, social activists and students.
