Considering the great sports tradition and the socio-cultural background, the university has established the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences in the year 2001 as a teaching and research department with a vision to provide quality professional training in Physical Education and to mould young talented sportspersons to achieve excellence in the field of Sports.

The department started with the B. P. Ed (Bachelor of Physical Education) and M. P. Ed (Master of Physical Education and later introduced MPhil in Physical Education and PhD programme in physical education. PG Diploma in Yoga, Certificate Programme in Health and Fitness and Certificate Programme in Kalaripayattu.

Within a short span of time, the Department has evolved itself as a Centre for excellence with the state of the art, infrastructure facilities and excellence in Performance in the field of Sports as well as professional training and research in Physical Education and Sports Sciences.

In 2022 the department started Master of Physical Education and Sports (M.P.E.S) as per the UGC Curriculum Framework. With the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP), the department initiated the integrated PG programme; Master of Physical Education and Sports as per the new curriculum frameworks for undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The Five-Year Integrated Master of Physical Education and Sports prorgamme started in 2023 offers flexible and student-centric options to exit with majors and minors in Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Psychology, Statistics and Computer Sciences.

The department at present offers Five-year Integrated Master of Physical Education and Sports Programme; two-year Master of Physical Education and Sports (M.P.E.S), PG Diploma in Yoga Education (PGDYE); Certificate in Yoga and Certificate in Swimming. The department being a research centre of Kannur University offers PhD programme Physical Education and Sports in specialised areas of Exercise Physiology and Athlete Training; Sports Psychology; Health, fitness and nutrition and other allied areas. The department is undertaking collaborative research with Badminton World Federation (BWF) in areas of sports science in badminton.
