Participatory Waste Management and Organic Farming among the households of Bedira Village (Kasaragod Muncipality)

First Stage:

As part of the extension activities survey was conducted to know the present condition of waste generation and disposal at the Bedira Village households.

The initial details of the households were collected such as Door No., No. of family members and age groups. To each household a card was given with ID Number. The total number of family members was taken to estimate the total waste generation. The average monthly waste generation in each household was found to be approximately 45 kg.

70% of the households are using plastic regularly for household activities. Most of the households are doing the segregation of wet waste and plastic waste and only very few are not doing that.50% of them are burning the plastic waste, 9% of them throwing it and 41% of them collecting it and keeping it separately. Waste generated in the households at the time of house based ceremonies and programmes -50% of them dig pits and dump in it and rest 50% burn it.

The average monthly usage of vegetables by these households is 16-18 kg, which they purchase from nearby shops.60% of them does not grow vegetables and does not have a kitchen garden.40% of them grow vegetables but does not use homemade compost. All most all of them know the benefits of kitchen garden and 90% of them are interested in getting training and doing organic farming.

It was found that there is no compost pits in most of homes as these houses are in small area and No biogas plant in any of the households.

Second Stage: The second phase two buckets each was supplied to the selected 50 households. One was used to collect the wet waste and the other to produce compost.

Third Stage: The next phase the 15 grow bags with filled cockpit cow dung and manure were supplied along with seeds.

Fourth stage: Monitoring of the houses by the group of trainees and teaching staff.

Conclusion:

Considering the objectives that were framed for the activity the following conclusions were done.

  • It could promote social learning among the students and faculties of university.
  • Could ensure Leadership, Community and Team Building Skills in students.
  • By providing civil education, creates the health enrichment of community.
  • It could generate sensibility for challenges in society and spread awareness for social responsibility.
  • Made the students and staff participate in waste management process- know the composition of waste/scientifically segregation of household waste and its management.
  • Estimate the rate of waste generation in the households and find the awareness level of the people towards waste minimization.
  • To set up home based composting and organic farming in the selected households.
  • Through this extension activity it was possible to impart knowledge about household waste management to the staff, students and community as a whole.
